At Hazak Legal, we specialize in helping individuals navigate the complex journey of establishing their Jewish identity according to Halachic law and Israeli law. Since our founding in 2006, we have been passionately committed to supporting individuals in proving their Jewish heritage, even in the face of challenging circumstances such as lost records, family histories impacted by the Holocaust, or the intricacies of the Jewish diaspora from Arab countries.
Our dedicated team of legal experts, genealogical researchers, and archive specialists brings years of expertise in accessing historical archives, understanding Jewish legal requirements, and collaborating closely with rabbinical authorities. Whether you need help gathering family documents, consulting with community leaders, or navigating an appeal process regarding your Jewish status, we provide comprehensive guidance and personalized support every step of the way.
We offer a wide range of services to assist you, including:
- Genealogical Research and Document Retrieval: We help you access family documents such as birth certificates, marriage records (ketubot), and other records from both local and international archives, including Diaspora and Holocaust archives.
- Verification with Rabbinical Authorities: We work closely with Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform rabbis to help verify your Jewish status in accordance with different standards and requirements.
- Legal Representation in Appeals: If your Jewish status has been questioned, we provide legal representation and assist in the appeals process to help you achieve formal recognition.
- Assistance with the Law of Return: We guide you through the Israeli immigration process, ensuring that your application under the Law of Return is accurate and complete, and we liaise with the Israeli Ministry of Interior and the Jewish Agency on your behalf.
- Community Liaison Services: We connect you with local Jewish communities, synagogues, and community leaders who can provide necessary testimonies or affidavits to support your claim.
- Translation and Notarization: Our team also provides translation and notarization services for documents in various languages to ensure they meet the standards required by Israeli and rabbinical authorities.
- DNA Testing Consultation: In cases where documentation is lacking, we offer guidance on DNA testing as supplementary evidence to support claims of Jewish ancestry, while understanding its limitations under Halachic law.
We work directly with both American and Israeli authorities, including the Israeli Rabbanut, the Ministry of Interior, and other government agencies, particularly in matters related to the Law of Return. Our extensive experience allows us to handle the complex requirements set forth by these bodies to ensure that your Jewish status is recognized for both religious and legal immigration purposes. We also collaborate with American institutions and rabbis to bridge the gap for individuals residing outside Israel who require formal verification of their Jewish status.
We understand how deeply meaningful your Judaism is and how important it is to have your heritage recognized and honored.
We understand that the process of establishing your Jewish identity can be deeply personal and sometimes overwhelming. Our mission is to provide compassionate, thorough, and professional support, ensuring that your journey is as seamless as possible while maximizing your chances of a successful outcome. Every story matters, and we are here to help you uncover and honor yours.
With a profound understanding of Diaspora records, Holocaust archives, Jewish legal procedures, and modern immigration processes, we are committed to helping you clarify your Jewish identity and obtain the recognition you seek—whether for personal reasons, immigration to Israel, or religious purposes. Let us help you navigate this important journey with confidence and care.

Figuring out if you're Jewish can be a bit complicated, but it comes down to a few key things, depending on whether you’re looking at it from a religious or legal perspective:
1. Maternal Lineage: In traditional Jewish law (Halacha), you’re considered Jewish if your mother is Jewish. It’s all about the maternal line, and you might need documents or family history to prove it. Halachic law requires that your mother is Jewish by Orthodox standards, meaning her lineage or conversion must meet certain religious criteria. Under Israeli law, however, the definition can be broader, and in some cases, people with Jewish ancestry on the mother's side may qualify even if their Jewish status isn't recognized by Orthodox authorities.
2. Conversion: If your mother isn’t Jewish, you can still become Jewish through conversion. For it to be recognized under Halacha, it needs to be done by an Orthodox rabbi.
3. The Law of Return: When it comes to Israeli citizenship, the Law of Return says you qualify if you have at least one Jewish grandparent—it doesn’t matter whether it’s on your mother’s or father’s side.
4. Proof and Documentation: Determining if you're Jewish often means gathering birth certificates, ketubot, or testimonies from family or community members.
How We Can Help
We know this process can feel overwhelming, but that’s where we come in. Our legal team specializes in helping people gather the right documentation and navigate both Halachic and Israeli requirements to determine Jewish status. Whether you need help finding old records, working with community leaders, or understanding the steps involved, we're here to guide you through every part of the journey. Let us help you clarify your Jewish identity and provide the support you need for formal recognition.
Yes, we work extensively with records from the Jewish Diaspora, including those from the Arab Jewish world, as well as Holocaust records. Whether your family belonged to Jewish communities in Arab countries such as Morocco, Iraq, or Egypt, or was affected by the displacements and tragedies of the Holocaust in Europe, we have the expertise to navigate a wide range of archival sources. Our team helps individuals access and interpret these historical records to reconstruct family histories and establish Jewish identity, even in the most challenging cases where documentation may be incomplete or lost.
If it is determined that you are not Jewish according to Halachic or Israeli law, you may or may not have options. In many cases, there is an appeal process available, which may involve providing additional documentation, seeking testimony from qualified rabbis, or presenting new evidence that supports your claim. However, there are instances where an appeal may not be possible, depending on the specific circumstances and the decision of the authorities involved.
Our team can guide you through this process, including helping you gather necessary documents, working with religious authorities, and representing your case to ensure all possibilities are considered. The goal is to give you the best chance for a successful outcome, even if your initial determination was not in your favor.
